Population and People of Mallorca

Mallorca is the most populated island in the Balearic Islands and the second in Spain after Tenerife in the Canary Islands, has a registered population of 862,397 inhabitants (2009), of which just under half live in its capital, Palma (401 270) (1 January 2008, INE). The municipalities that are still in Calvia population (51 774), Manacor (40 548), Inca (29,308) Llucmajor (36 078), Marratxí (33348) Alcudia (19 071), Felanitx (18 270) and Pollença (17 260) (data INE, January 1, 2009).

The metropolitan area of Palma de Mallorca, which spans the towns of Palma de Mallorca, Calvia, Llucmajor Marratxí and located in the Bay of Palma, has more than 500,000. In contrast, the least populous municipality is to Escorca (280) located in the Serra de Tramuntana.

Mallorca receives about 12 million visitors a year primarily due to tourism, which is the most important of the island. This influx of visitors means that in summer the population of cities will multiply. It is remarkable the presence of a large number of foreign residents.
